Marina Lewycka’s first novel that tells the story of functionally dysfunctional family in which an aging parent needs immediate rescue from an unrealistic love affair. His adult children cannot get him to behave, nor dissuade the enchantingly hateable Ukrainian divorcee who is to be their father’s new bride. This book is darkly humorous, immensely readable and unpretentious. There are some moments early in the novel where you may think it becomes too much of a screwball comedy, but stick with it. Despite the apparent lightness of the novel you find yourself thinking about it weeks after you put it down. These characters will stay with you and you will miss them.
